Is anyone having problems with AVG Free 8?

Recently I noticed that my copy of AVG free wasn't running (missing from the task bar) (gawd knows how long THAT'S been going on!) and when I tried to manually start it, it complained about the configuration and recomended that I perform a repair. I tried to reinstall it with the "repair" option but that failed, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. However, after running the upgrades, it failed again. Wash, rinse, repeat. I finally got it running again by reinstalling it and running the upgrade once.

I'm curious if anyone else has had problems with AVG Free 8 like mine. I recall when it was first released, there was an issue with the update function...

Yes, I've a number of users all with problems. All using the free version 8. The main problem appears to show itself as an Update Manager error: The connection failed.

In every case I've looked at so far, this is not a question of the user's computer or Internet connection being at fault. This is what is reported regarding regarding the AVG FREE Update Server:-

Our technology department is currently working on improving one of the main servers responsible for providing updates of AVG Free Edition. This maintenance may have, under specific circumstances, effect on availability of update files on our servers. Backup systems, which are now in charge of providing updates, may be from time to time overloaded with customer requests and we are doing our best in order to improve their function to remedy this issue. If you encounter issue with “Update failed”, please retry in a few minutes to update AVG manually (open AVG User Interface, click the “Update now” button).

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. In a week time, new improved update servers should be available.

It is now well over a week, so one might have expected a better service by now. I get the impression that there are a lot of unhappy people out there still trying to use this version of the software. Whilst I am not convinced the problems are caused by the "new" version 8 software, it seems that AVG is doing themselves no favours with the continuing problems users are experiencing.

It must be said that there's no such thing as a free lunch, but if folk trial the free version with a view to subsequently going for the paid application, they'll not be impressed with this inability to regularly update.

I've had problems with the automatic download lately. Even if I use the "Update now" button it fails more often than not. However, if I open the AVG User Interface and go Tools ->update then the download completes without any problems. Tools ->update must pull the updates from different servers than the automatic updates are pulled from. As G0AOZ states, the download failures have been happening for about two weeks.

Cheers.

Well, I remember they had some issues like this at least a month or two ago. I had some issues then, but haven't had any major issues since. Also, I've known some others with similar issues. Sounds like it just depends upon which server you're connecting to for now, perhaps.

kjv1611, believe me there's lots of folks with issues right now! As regards which server you're connecting to, I guess you don't have any options. Or do you?

I see AVG has now modified its statement, which sort of indicates problems are on-going.

One thing puzzles me about that forum. At the top of the page it says, and I quote, "Discussions help and advice on AVG's latest free product", and yet one poster was firmly told, "This isn't a discussion forum..." [ponder]

Back when AVG first came out, it was ungodly slow to update. There were published hacks on the Internet to get it to use the paid servers, which helped a LOT.

As for the problems, I've had nothing but. I finally had to take it off all my machines as it would not allow me to use my favorite photo viewer, ACDSee 3.1, but I was having a lot of update failures too.

Now my free A/V of choice is Avast!, lots of popups but they're easy to dismiss, and if it finds a file of interest that I know is not a problem, I can get around it where AVG would not.
