But is your question whether you can run 32 or 64 bit programs on AIX..
or what the AIX kernel is running at?
AIX Version 4.3 provides an environment for RS/6000 systems, which enables the full exploitation of future computing, networking, and business needs, while maintaining a stable application base to help protect investments. AIX Version 4.3 offers the following benefits:
Binary compatibility with existing RS/6000 computing environments
New 64-bit hardware and application support
Support for 32-bit and 64-bit application co-existence and concurrent execution
Broader scalability - computing environments enabled for 64-bit computing
32/64-bit coexistence on 64-bit system
Support for existing 32-bit systems
Please verify that your hardware is 64-bit. You are not going to be able to put 64-bit Oracle or 64-bit AIX on a 32-bit machine. It varies by machine model. We are stopping at Oracle 8.1.7 because probably less than 75% of our servers are 64-bit.
Many thanks folks for all your inputs, basically we have just purchased an IBM F50 box so I am assuming it is 64 bits? And I have not yet installed AIX 4.3.3 that is why I would like to know if it is 64 or 32 bits? As I believe there are two different version of Oracle 8.1.7 (32 or 64 bits)?
Is there anywhere I can find out without having to run queries on the box?
Utilizing the advanced PowerPC 604e processor and X5 Level 2 cache
64 bit Kernel support is available for the following POWER based
systems:
7013 Model S70, S7A
7015 Model S70, S7A
7017 Model S70, S7A, S80
7025 Model H80, F80
7026 Model H70,H80,M80
7043 Model 260, 270
7044 Model 170,270
680 Model S85
640 Model B80
660 Model 6H1
620 Model 6F1
echo aixqueen: 7025 F50 is 32-bit. So is 7026 H50, which is a rack-mount F50. H70 is 64-bit, and we are juggling servers to facilitate future 64-bit needs.
I am sorry if this is a stupid question to ask, how do I know if this disk has not been formatted or is it definitely corrupted? The error message doesn't seem clear to me.
As far as I know (we do not have any report or documentations for the work the ex-DBA has done) he tried installing Oracle 8.1.7 and that was it. There are no data on the disk only AIX files and oracle stuffs.
I am not pleased with the way he configured the installation i.e. it does not comply with Oracle OFA standard and other probs too.
So basically the plan is for me to wipe everything out and install AIX 4.3.3 and configure it before installing Oracle 8.1.7
If I am going to wipe it out, is there any files I should keep i.e. bootable file?
smitty reducevg2 and press f4 to select oraclevg and delete it...
or
try the exportvg oraclevg ............ it could be that only odm data is still there...
or
It really doesn't matter if you are going to start all over again...because when you reinstall AIX, it will wipe out what is there...And when you create a new volume group for your oracle it will wipe it all out as well as long as you deleted it
and the lspv shows none for the disk that the oracle is currently on.
when you reinstall...it wipes everything out...so there is no saving anything....
If there were oracle files...and if you could get to them...which doesn't sound like the case...I would have done a mksysb of the rootvg and a savevg of the oraclevg
But it appears that the oraclevg is already deleted...or corrupted...or destroyed by the previous dba...
The mksysb of the rootvg may be a good thing...incase there are drivers that are installed on the system, that are not from the level of the cd you have.........
Backing up a few comments... there is no "format" done on AIX disks such as what is done with DOS FAT disks. They are "formatted" when the vg is extended and the PPs are ready for use immediately.
