Is ActiveX platform dependent??

Hi i have a relatively simple question to ask which is weather ActiveX is platform dependent? i have read up on articles on the web saying it only runs on windows platform wheres others say microsoft is currently working on it to be platform independent. some of these articles i read is dated 1997 so is or is it not platform dependent right now?? also it is possible to convert activeX control into java which is platform independent so does this makes ActiveX platform independent??

Yes, Active-X is very much a vendor-dependent, platform-dependent closed system.
