Hello I have tried everywhere on the web and I can't seem to find a good answer. I connect to the internet through a cable modem with no router. What I am trying to do is to hide change or conceal my ip address from going all over the internet. No an anonymous proxy will not work because I also play online internet games that does not use http. A little more specifically I play a MUD through Pueblo UE which is a really colorful telnet prompt. If I could figure out how to keep "my" ip from showing on the game then that would complete what I need. I tried setting up a vpn connection to encrypt my ip and I also tried many proxies but they only work on the web. If there is a program or something that i can use to change or hide my ip on games then I would be very impressed as no one else can even begin to comprehend what I need.

What your going to need is a software solution, try googling what you want to do.

No---NAT will do...if your cable modem NATs, then you're good to go...does ipconfig show a private (192.168.x.x) IP address? The other two classes are 172.16.x.x-172.31.255.254, and 10.x.x.x/8...if none of these are your IP address, then you need a router that will NAT...people may be able to see the IP address of your router/cable modem, but no worries...they can't hack into the computer because of NAT, as private IP addresses are not routable on the internet. Nobody can see your IP address of your computer. Your router would block all requests that originate from the public side.
Now if you go into chatrooms, well...perhaps a proxy (offshore---not exactly legal sometimes).

when i type ipconfig when in command prompt the ip address changes but it is 75.137.152.215
my subnet mask is 255.255.xxx.x
and my default gateway is 75.137.xxx.x
I just want to be able to log onto my games and on the web and people not know where i live. Is there a way to make my ip address look like its from vegas or washington or something.

Whom are you trying to hide your IP address from? You have nothing to worry about if you NAT...with your public IP available, it is likely you can get "hacked" (as the term is so loosely used these days...). Big Brother will still know where you are coming from and can find your computer and real IP address by MAC address of your NIC from which you transmit, or from your ISP. People would know immediately if you were using a proxy, and if they had an internetwork sniffer (rather than a network sniffer), like government grade, then they could bounce right to your computer and real public IP address. There is still an IP header that has your info in it that ends at the proxy server...it would simply be a matter of obtaining information from it. Plus, whomever is running said proxy server has your info anyway, and depending on where that may be, is it safe???
Stop reading those Ray Bradbury and Orson Wells books...lol

Or if you use a software proxy, there is still the issue of your MAC address...
