I'm starting a new job where I'll be managing a multi-point metropolitan-area network -- at least 12 routers. The new boss wants to buy a laptop for me, but wonders whether the laptop needs a serial port to talk to routers and switches.

Seven years ago I would have said yes, absolutely. But what about now? Are serial ports still standard issue on routers and switches? Would I be crazy to trust in a USB-serial converter, or should I get something with a serial port even if it's refurbed and obsolete in every other way?

(I'd say "Toughbook" and be done with it, but the new shop is a non-profit and it's not made of money.)

I don't think you can order a laptop with a serial port anymore. Most manufacturers have eliminated all the legacy ports and make you buy a mini dock that includes them if you need them.
I agree though that the USB converters are a pain overall. I just got a new laptop and I miss my bult in serial port.

I've been using a laptop with a converter for years. Works fine. However, make sure you have several USB ports on the laptop. The converters don't work through USB hubs.

Also, make sure the converter can issue a break sequence for Cisco password recovery procedures. Some of the early ones didn't let you.

I have also used USB converters for years: the contacts wear out and it fails. The software fails. People pinch your converter or you lose it. It's another coil of crap to carry around in your bag.

All things considered, a serial port is convenient and reliable. A USB converter is neither.

A lot of builders don't even use a serial port on a laptop anymore so you have to get a usb to serial converter. If you get a good one they work fine, never had a issue with the one i have which is a tripplite usb converter. Don't know if they still make them or not , have had it for like 6-7 years now. works great with tera term as the emulator..

I use a combination of usb to serial adapters and serial cardbus adapters.

On a side note, I find it odd that you would be qualified for such a position but have to ask such an entry level question.
