Is a rootvg spanned over multiple disks a bad idea? I would like more room on my rootvg and I am considering extending rootvg by adding a disk. However, I am worroried that a mksysb taken of a VG over multiple disks is more difficult to restore. Is this the case? Should I try to keep rootvg on one PV?

Thanks.

If i got your question right!

When you restore using a mksysb you can choose your disks to be used as rootvg for your mksysb data!

Like if you have 10 disks (of 10G each) that used to be on a machine and you took the mksysb of that machine then you wanted to restore that mksysb on a different machine which has 5 disks (of 20G each) then you can do that by choosing the 5 disks while restoring the mksysb on that machine! (I'm assuming that the mksysb is 100G in size!!!)

or you can restore it to the same machine by choosing those 10 disks while restoring!

so no worries about adding that extra disk as long as you know the total size of your mksysb (in case you want to restore this mksysb on a different machine) and as long as you know that the disks to be chosen while restoring the mksysb on the same machine

Khalid

I'd advise you keep a hard copy of lscfg or prtconf output along with your mksysb tapes; makes it much easier when you come to need them.

Thanks everyone! All of your input was very helpful to me (and hopefully some others). :)
