In common with many other places throughout the world, Dublin (Ireland) has its fair share of monuments and statuary. Arty, historic, symbolic and decorative these monuments have covered wide and varied topics.

However, no matter how well intentioned (and possibly pompous) the commissioning and erection of the monuments, Dubliners have always been very quick to create a new name for the monument, in many cases poking fun at the subject, object or the city.

In most cases the names have been a play on words utilising rhyming and in several cases the alternative titles are somewhat fitting.

I have listed below as many of the monuments that have thus been treated and provide the original title, the alternative title(s) and a link to a photograph of each.

I would love to hear the alternative names of the monuments that you have in your area. I hope that this brings a laugh to all who read…

Tom.

A good way to carry this on might be to post links to monuments, and request captions, or maybe a photo caption competition.

Anyone got decent photos, that are just begging for a caption, no filth, or "priceless" photos please
