Just going to pick everyone's brain. I was talking to my boss today and he mentioned about there were certain requirements when you did not need IROBS. He said,"The conduit had to be metal(EMT), grounded on both sides, had to penetrate in the building" and had to be less than a certain length. This pertained to the old system 75, Horizon..ect ect. If Anyone remembers, please let me know. Oh, and yes I know it is always best to have the IROBS. Just that my boss was wondering for a bid. Thanks all.

I was taught that if the phone is not in the main building where the phone system is it needed an IROB even if it was in a conduit. Never hurts to have irobs for out of building phones.

Avaya says:

Out-of-Building Installations

Installation of a telephone or other standard (tip/ring) device in another building requires In-Range-Out-of-Building (IROB) protectors to protect the control unit and device from electrical surges. For a remote system phone, 2 IROB protectors are needed. If it is a standard phone, only 1 IROB protector to guard the Control Unit is needed plus 1 carbon block protector.
