Is an "irob" required to extend a 2500 set to a remote location?

The IROB was designed for classic Merlin phones (ATL) to provide protection of the phone and circuit cards due to electrical problems. It was not designed for T/R phones such as the 2500.

Standard lightning arrestors would probably work at the point the line exits one building and enters another.

Thanks for the reply. It verifies what I thought. Thanks, Clyde.

Absolutly not, the IROB was designed as lightning protection for all phones. Maybe the Merlin phones were first to have IROBS. Yet, you need Primary protection, then you need secondary protection at least on the equipment end. You can use a 146D protector or a 146C made by towermax for AVAYA. If lightning were to hit the exterior cable and travel through without IROBS, at least the port would be shot, maybe the card, maybe the system. We just got hammered with thunderstorms all last week, even with IROBS I had a port go bad on a TDL card. Imagine without the IROB.

Jinxs.
If irob's are needed on 2500 set aplications, which irob part number is required? Your post mentions 146C. The units I have are 146E and ringing is not passed through them. My sets (ATT 972 2 line sets) work fine (ringing-wise) plugged directly into the 008OPT card in the Magix, but when I plug them into the output side of the switch end irob, they don't ring.
Thanks in advance.

The 146E are primarly for digital phones where it will not allow 90V to pass through the first pair(pins 4,5). This will cause a ring trip if you connect and analog or partner phone off of a partner system. The 146E can be used on the legend/magix for all phones except for the t/r port. You can use the 146D for the partner phones or the 146C for c/o line protection. Either one will work. Hope this helps.
