Irix on non SGI machines and software compatibility

I'm not an Irix user but because of my profession (micromechanics) I'm thinking about buying their products and would like to know does Irix operating system work only on SGI machines (for ex. Octane, Fuel, Indigo,...) or can it be installed on other computers and laptops and also, does software and programs (for ex. CAD/CAM and FEA software, programing tools and other) written for Unix or Linux work on Irix or has to be specially written for Irix?
