We have a 4000 series cisco router in a sub-office that will stop forwarding ipx about 2 or 3 times a week. If we reboot the router I will be able to see the servers on the other side in about an hour or so. Is there anything that anyone would know that would cause this? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Alex

I would guess without seeing the configurations, that you have a routing issue of either RIP or whatever routing protocol you are using. The fact it works for a hour or so leads me to think this. Thats about right for a timer to time-out regarding routes.

Just a SWAG :)

hi Mike,
I do'nt think any timer have timeout period of 1hrs.

Depends.. we had an OSPF network where the timers were set from 10 mins to 30 minutes.. it took a bit over an hour for the routes to die when the link went down. I'm making assumptions and I'm just tossing out some random ideas :)

Hi Mike,
I am talking about IPX timers, mostly last for 1 or 2 min.
It seems SAP table problem.

ALEX,
Can you put on the Config.

Again.. I'm thinking outloud... this same network.. with the funny OSPF timers? We used DLSW to push across the IPX, SNA and a few other protocols. Hence, when OSPF had problems and the routes went away.. the DLSW lost it's remote peer and dropped the IPX and SNA links. No IPX routes and no IPX connection on *that* side of the routers. The point is that sometimes there is an interaction between seemingly unrelated items. IPX and OSPF? how since OSPF is IP only? because of the DLSW which *IS* IP based carrying the IPX they are now related. COUld we have used EIGRP which will route IPX? sure.. except it's Cisco only and we use the OSPF to pass routes to a 3Com layer 3 switch. Never as simple as it seems :)

A few thoughts... run DEBUG on your routing protocol.. look for dead timers.. error messages and such.

Run DEBUG on the SAP to make sure the SAPS are getting there..

You could run DEBUG IPX PACKET but it might get out of hand depending on the amount of traffic. Posting the configs of BOTH routers.. the one working and the one thats forgetful will be a help

ok...it takes IPX a few days to stop routing...but, when the router is rebooted...it takes a couple of hours until I can see the servers on the other side. I probably will not post the config. anytime soon. I don't have passwords and probably will not get them for about three weeks and the routers are in another city about 4 hrs away. Anyway, I appreciate any input you all have given and/or will give.

Thank You very much

Alex
