I am using a mac mini with my iPOD and I need to know how to keep videos and music on the iPOD while deleting it from my computers hard drive. I haven't been able to figure this out because whenever I delete something from itunes, it is automatically deleted off the iPOD. Is there a way to do this without turning auto-update off?

This is the way iTunes works. Since Apple did not design a way for you to get music files back off of your iPod, they expect you to keep a copy of the files on the host computer.

Because I have a lot of CD's that I've ripped over the years (perfectly legal - I own them all), I store my iTunes files on a server that has a larger hard drive than the Mac Mini. Only downside is the extra step to authenticate to the network before I can listen to my music.

You can change the default library path in the iTunes options dialog to point to a network share.

Good idea, Chip. When I was an iPod phone person, we always advised keeping the music somewhere safe and backing up! Lots of people would just use an external drive.
