IPO500v2 Lease Repleacement / Buyout 3

Hi All,

Hoping some of you smart people can help me.

My company is currently finishing a 5yr lease on an IPO500v2 on R8.1 with 20 DLI handsets, 25 IP handsets, and associated equipment. I am investigating what the options are on buyout vs leasing a new system and have a quote for a "new" IPO500v2 system with similar licensing but all IP handsets.

Are there any differences between a IPO500v2 chassis now and an IPO500v2 chassis from 5 years ago? Do you think it would be better to buyout the system and just upgrade at the component level or replace the whole system? Either way I would like to upgrade the software to R10 and make use of some new features, if I kept the old system would I have to replace modules or would the modules I have work with the new software?

I'm open to any and all thoughts on this before I spend the money.
 
No need to throw out the entire system because they are next to identical but I would make sure I have a service contract with a competent BP to get help should it go down.

Forgot to say something else.
If your handsets are OK then why changing to IP sets?
Do you already have the network setup for it? PoE switches, VLAN'd network, QoS setup etc.....
I know that people are all eager to sell IP sets but they do not make sense in every scenario and keeping your system and buying it out may be significantly cheaper than leasing a new one and less chaotic because of the interruptions a new system may bring when installing it.
If you get another 5 years out of your system then you can throw it out without the bad taste of having paid every month and not actually owning anything (AKA leasing)

Yes, IP handsets are for most users just another way to deliver dial tone. A much more expensive way. But dial tone is dial tone.
 
Thanks for your reply! Yes, I have the infrastructure in place for IP handsets.

I do have some dead DLI ports and handsets, and I find the 9608 handsets more usable than the 1408s that we currently have.

One of my concerns is that I'm being told by the Avaya BP that my "older" (5 years) IPO500v2 will have issues with R10 and that I may have to replace modules and my power user/office worker/IP Endpoint licenses. I am moving to office365 and I would like to make use of the newer productivity features so I want to make sure I have the needed horsepower.

We don't have a service contract on the current system, is it commonplace to start a service contract with a BP on a used system? The BP is saying the service contract on the new system will offer hardware replacement for the term of the lease, would it be common to be able to get that on a used system also?

The only iddue you may encounter with R10 is that older IP400 hardware does not work on R9.1+.
But if your system is all equipped with IP500 hardware then there is no problem.
Exsisting licenses will stil be valid in R10, the only thing you really need to buy is a R10 upgrade license and maybe some additional Avaya IP Endpoint licenses when you decide to replace the DS set for IP sets.
Going to R10 will enforce you to buy a AVAYA IPOSS service contract anyway so the service is covered.
 
And yes, you can get maintenance contracts on existing kit, but only once it's already fixed. Much like you can't blow the engine on your car then get an extended warranty and ask them for a £1500 fix the next day :)

 
Also look at the 9508 handsets, they are the same as the 9608 to look at and functionally but work on your existing DS ports :)

 
The 1400 sets are the economical handset while the 9508 and 9608 are the more luxurious handset.

They both say Avaya but they are definitely a world apart just like Mercedes A180 and S550 both say Mercedes on it. :)

It sounds like the BP is yanking my chain on the control unit hardware side with R10 causing problems.

I appreciate everyone's input!!
 
Some BPs are crooks. I have run into a couple that were utterly disreputable.

don't assign to malice that which can be explained by Incompetence :)

however, depending on the current firmware level of the IP500V2 there may be some minor (certainly not insurmountable) issue with migrating to V10.

what V10 features are you actually after as my general advice is "If it aint broke don't fix it!"

On the phone" prompt and some SIP changes...that's about it that I would call feature(s) there's some resiliency stuff that would appeal to a small minority but really nothing to upgrade for unless you need the on the phone prompt :)

 
I'm currently on R8.1, from what I can see most of the productivity integrations and LDAP user sync didn't come until R9. Just saying R10 since it is the latest release. Also being able to use sip with the mobile app for travelling employees is a big plus.

I think there are dishonest vendors in every field, so know surprise. Really my wonder is whether this is dishonesty or just sales speak.
