Iphone Citrix Receiver

We use a https site for Citrix. Using the receiver we can browse and launch our applications via the Iphone when we are inside our lan. Outside our lan we can browse the published apps but they will not launch. Initially we were told this was because we don't use Access Gateway or Secure Gateway. But I recently found some documentation that may not be the case. Do we need a gateway or is there another way?
