I have an ethernet connection to the red interface (internet) on IPCop and would like to know if it is possible to have a dialup backup.

I have read through the IPCop manual, looked in the IPcop forum and other places suggested by a previous answer and cannot find what I am looking for.

Dial backup would traditionally fall to the router, not the firewall.

I've never seen an attempt to do this, but it should work theoretically. I'd be interested if you find a way to make it work, but I don't see how the firewall could reliably determine whether the router's link had failed.

You're right.

I guess even a manual selection of what interface you want to use could work. It would then be up to the admin to determine if the cable was out or not and manually initiate a dial-up connection.

I am guessing that IPCop may well be outside the scope of this forum, just hoping that someone out there may have a solution. Basically the IPcop machine will connect to the cable modem via ethernet, so no other dial up option other than the firewall.
