I am running winXP pro with no network connection and a dialup internet connection. I need to set an IP for use with some of the programming.

When I am not connected to the internet and I type ipconfig /all, nothing is shown.

when I am connected to the internet my ISP ip addies are shown.

I can ping my hostname and get a response.

I cannot telnet to my hostname on a particular port even if i have a listener showing in netstat as listening.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
DJ

There are a few things you should consider.

First, you should check whether port 23 is open if you want to use telnet. Then check whether you have a firewall installed. Firewalls often filters packets so there might be a chance that packets have been filtered out. Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings, they did it by
killing all those who opposed them.

Problem solved. My internal NIC card was not working.

The ping problem for a particular port was blocked by my firewall, Zone Alarm Pro, and once i set ping up as a server it worked fine.

Thanks
