Glohamar, thanks for your reply. In response to your question, I have the Ipaq 4000. I was told that Windows CE came pre-installed in those types of PPC. Is this true?
Windows CE is the 'family' of Windows that PocketPCs run (I think CE stands for 'Compact Environment') and Windows Mobile 2003 is the current version of Windows CE. My Viewsonic V37, bought only this year, runs the older Windows Mobile 2002, which is Windows CE 3.0.11171.
If you go to the main menu and tap on 'settings' then select the 'system' tab and tap 'about' it will tell you which version of Windows CE you have. I don't think it will tell you whether that's 2002 or 2003 though, you'll probably have to look on Microsoft's web site for that.
Microsoft don't help matters with their confusing naming conventions.
kpokey, you have WM2003 with the option to upgrade to WM2003 SE when HP provides the upgrade, for a fee of course usually $30 US. WM2003 is based on the Windows CE 4.0 version, I think 4.2 actually. Microsoft is already working on Windows CE 5.0 for the next generation of mobile devices.
Nelviticus is correct that you can find which version you have, but for WM2003 you need to follow this, Start--> Settings --> System tab(at the bottom) --> Asset Viewer --> look under version and it will tell you which version you have, should be Windows CE 4.20.
All Windows CE version 3.x will be PPC2000 and PPC2002. All with Windows CE version 4.x will be at least WM2003.
