We have several of these and all have the same problem. Every now and then, the device is unable to 'connect' when in Messaging. It can browse the internet though. Basically, that icon is greyed out as it the Send/Receive icon next to it (both at the bottom of the screen).
Somtimes a soft reset fixes the problem BUT not all the time. Another fix is to delete/modify/recreate the POP3 settings for the mail account - then it becomes available again.
Any ideas guys?
