I hope this is the right area to post. I've got someone that needs his IPAD2 updated to IOS5, but I'm not finding much in the way of a procedure. I found this:

But it talks about "attempting to update using a Mac or PC with which you normally sync" or "attempting to update using a Mac or PC with which you do not normally sync"

This IPAD never syncs with another device. So, am I to understand that for backup purposes, the IPAD must be synced with a PC?? I guess I never thought that IPAD users ever did this - like it was a standalone device and for some people, their only "computer".

Any better links for IOS5 installation in this situation - a never synced/backed up IPAD.

I'm sure that you have observed that people that don't backup their computer or portable device often need to rely on friends/coworkers to rescue them.

iOS5 allows future system updates without being tethered to a computer. But you need a tether to update to iOS 5.

The Ipad like the Iphone relies on Itunes for its synching. You have to have Itunes, on a PC or MAC. To get to IOS 5, you have to establish a synch relationship with a computer running Itunes. Then get the software update, that has the build in Icloud. Then you can configure the device to synch over the cloud, and you are off and running. But to get there,, you have to use a computer and Itunes.

If the owner has nothing that needs backing up, they can pop into an Applestore and ask nicely for it to be updated (an appointment may be wise) - this is what my Father-in-law did.

Ok, then I understood everything correctly. Thanks for clarifying/verifying. I just never thought of IPAD owners doing a sync with any PC/Mac. I always thought of them as standalone alternatives for a laptop/desktop.

I own no Apple products, so A) I'm an Apple dummy and B) I'm not hip.

goombawaho,

My F-i-L is the farthest from 'hip' that I know, other than having lived through the Sixties; this forum exists to offer help & advice.

As the other respondents have noted, from iOS5 the device is far less dependent on a 'mother' computer.
