I have a customer with an IP500v2 at 6.1.22, essential edition I believe. It has 2 combo cards with 5 POTS lines. Randomly, the system will display "waiting for line" in the display for several seconds when trying to place an external call. Thoughts???

If it just started happening, test each of the lines for dial tone. The outgoing lines are picked by the line that has been idle the most. You can watch in SSA to see which trunks are being accessed for the outgoing call to narrow it down.

Otherwise, you may have one of your 3 unused CO ports set to In Service and in the same Outgoing Line Group as the working lines. Set the status to Out of Service and change the LG to something else

I watched in System Status while making test calls. It seems to randomly happen, but always picks up the next line in sequence... (1st test call, card 1, port 9 | 2nd test call, card 1, port 10,,,,,). All lines have dial tone and good battery voltage from the CO. I have not set the unused ports out of service. I have never done that and not had an issue, but it is worth trying. I'll give it a shot.

You either need to set them out of service or set them to a different outbound line id.

Or use a ATM-V2 (not possible on R6.1.22) which will detect lack of battery voltage to put them out of service on the CO side automatically

Ahhh, The ATM V2 modules auto detecting the battery voltage makes since. Most of the systems I've installed have been newer and used the V2 modules...

This is a system I donated to a non-profit and was mostly equipment I had on the shelf in my back room, except for a refurbished IP400-DS16 unit that I bought to run their 4400 sets. They were running an old Magix that was starting to have issues.

Thanks TouchToneTommy, I'll be back in their town tomorrow and will stop by and set the unused ports out of service. I'm betting that will fix it....
