I am proposing an upgrade on an IP406v2 R6.1 with an IP500v2 R8. They currently have 8 Port VM Pro. Do I still need to sell them R8 Essential Edition license and / or the R8 Upgrade license to maintain Preferred Edition? I am aware of the technical bulletin but it seems to not be accurate. Looking for hands on experience with this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Officially yes, in reality No!

I will explain, what you do is load R7 onto the brand new 500v2 system and make/attempt to make an external call so it hits the lines/line card. Then load 8.0.18 and you will have the essential edition licence free so your VM Pro/preferred will work.

Alternatively go straight to R8 and load the R8 upgrade licence :)

amriddle01, seriously? [surprise] How did you figure this one out? If this is correct Avaya is going to have a heart attack..!
Are you super sure the license will not go invalid after 90 days? [dazed]

Indeed, i already did a system this way.
Although i already had a pre 8 voicemail pro license.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

This whole thing has only came about because Avaya tried to screw more money out of people buying the system without giving anything in return, they deserve to be screwed themselves as it showed the complete disregard they have for their existing customers and BP's trying to compete in a difficult market in difficult times :)

Thanks Andy, and a star for you. Makes sense that there is a work around for it, as this customer purchased VM Pro at the old $$$ Price originally. Of course, I went ahead and built the upgrade license into the pricing anyway.... :) But good to know going forward.

Andy, just out of curiosity, what if customer has a 500v2 with Power Users, but only the built in Essential Edition VM? In order to get to R8, you'd need the upgrade license, new Essential Edition license, and Preferred Edition? That could piss some people off.....

That could instead piss off some customers.
But if you have power users then you have 1XP, UMS and all the other stuff.
I think (and Avaya too) you should have VMPro too.

if there are any user licenses (Office, Mobile or power user) without Preferred then there is only one thing to know about R8

STAY AWAY FROM R8 OR BUY PREFERRED WITH IT.

Have to correct myself here, the upgrade license makes the User licenses work on R8

From TB141
Systems upgraded to 8.0(18) using an upgrade license will be allowed essential
functionality without a real Essential Edition license. This will also allow User Profile
licenses to be valid without a Preferred Edition license and allow additional User Profile
licenses to be added. A system with an upgrade license will also have a Virtual
Essential License.

Indeed, it's only One x portal that really requires preferred to function, but it kind of requires it for full functionality anyway :)
