Hi, I have always been interested in knowing this. The IP Address that is shown in some web-based email like Hotmail, GMail, etc. are they the IP of the user's machine? Or the IP of Hotmail and GMail, etc.? I once had a networking class where we discussed IP tracing, and this question was left in the air (due to class time restrictions). I always wondered if I sent an (hotmail) email my buddy in California who uses GMail, would he be able to see where I sent the email from (ie: NY, FLA, etc)

Anyone have any ideas?

tracing IP headers in emails is one thing, but webmail operates differently.

I wouldn't know the specifics of Hotmail or GMail (although if you know anyone with a GMail account it's fairly easy to test) - suffice to say that it is down to the configuration of the webmail. Some may include the originating IP (typically as an X-header) but not all will do this.

just send yourself email from that account and check the headers

Hi guys, I tried that. I have a GMail and an Hotmail account, and in both I only see Google or Hotmail IP address being shown. Hotmail is more in-depth as it shows the x-header and whatnot.

BTW, took another look and:

X-Originating-IP comes back as my ISP provider
X-Originating-Email and X-Sender comes back as the email address itself

Hotmail headers:
X-Originating-IP shows my current public IP

GMail headers:
Do not show my current public IP

Serbtastic, hmmm. Then how for me it comes back as my ISP provider's IP? Does the ISP mask the IP Address? Who's your provider? Mine is Verizon.
