I was wondering if you could trace an IP address that is connected to the internet on a DSL modem. Like if they post something on a forum is there anyway to trace it?? Are IP address static or not?? what if they have a router with wireless internet

Depends on the service. Some IPs are fully static. Some are dynamic yet they are assigned a reservation making them semi-static. Other IPs are dynamic yet they don't change very often (sometimes months) even after power failures. Finally some are dynamic and can change with every reconnection (power failures, log on on-demand)...

so what you are saying is that you are not sure if a DSL connection has a static or dynamic IP

What he is saying is that it depends on the contract you sign. My DSL line has a dynamic IP, but I can have a static IP for more $$.

If you post something in a forum, yes it can be traced to you even if your IP changes. The Dept of Homeland Security would first request the IP from the forum operator or from their ISP. Then they would ask your ISP to tell them who had that IP on the date and time. Then guys in black suits and sunglasses show up at your door.
