I'm trying to setup some kind of soft IP phone. Do I need to use Avaya's or is there an alternative?

You got it, Avaya Phone Manager and their soft phone license.

It would be interesting to see third party software running as the IP Softphone, but don't expect support from the manufacture.

Did you get this working?
I have a client trying to use Netmeeting but the IP Office just rejects the call. Monitor shows 'resource unavailable'

Any suggestions?

Rick,
I thought the whole point of the IP Office Small Office edition was you could use up to 3 IP Phones without licenses as long as they weren't Phone Manager VoIP ones. Certainly the documentation for the 46xx IP Phone says you DO NOT need a license on the IP Office to use the phone just sufficient VCM channels.

If a license is needed then they do not make this clear and in fact I would say they are selling the unit under false pretenses!

Is there any way to get 1 license working to prove the system without buying the license? The old Network Alchemy used to give a 5 minute version of Phone Manager Pro to let you test the features.

I may be wrong but the way I understand it is the IP Office Small office comes with either a 3 or 16 channel voice compression module. This means that you can use 46xx IP phones etc to connect to the box without the need for a license, as in reallity its the phone that is the license and that way their not cheap.

However if you are using software you need to purchase the ip endpoint license, otherwise Avaya would not be able to make any money from it as we would all use netmeeting instead of phone manager pro.

I dont think you can get around it, however in testing we found the voice quality of phone manager pro far better then that of netmeeting.

Having checked through various documents, you are right and I do need an IP endpoint license. I consider this a bit of a rip-off as the Network Alchemy never used to require this and I think it will be detrimental to their sales in the long run.

There are other similar system coming on the market without the same restrictions e.g.
Re Netmeeting versus Phone Manager Pro well the quality issue doesn't surprise me. The client will probably buy a good softphone but he is a techie and will be trying various softphones and writing an article.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers
Mike
