I am working for a company that has a NT Domain in place (NT3.5) with a mix of OS on the client pc's. We have recently acqured an IBM Iseries which we will be using for the file server, and we will not be logging into the domain with pc's running XP Professional. THe current ip configuration has the IP of the NT server as the gateway, what will I need to use as the gateway in lieu of the NT box. We are also moving from 10baseT hubs to a 10/100 managed switch. We do not have a router as we do not have an internet connection. Thanks

Huh? You wanna ask that question another way? You've got some extra detail floatin in there that confuses the actual question. (and NT 3.5?!?!?! Yike!!!!)

If you don't have a router and all the machines are in the same subnet, 192.168.1.x or whatever, you can give your new machine any IP you want as long as it is in the range.

The gateway is supposed to be a router. If you machines don't know how to find an address, because it is not in your subnet, they send the request to the router to find a way...

Thanks,

If you have a private network with no Internet connection and all your PC's are within the same subnet then you really don't need to have a gateway per se since each PC should be able to find any PC on the same segment. You can put whatever machine you want as a default gateway since theoretically it should never need to use it.

As said, you only need a Layer 3 device when using different subnets, otherwise all PC's should be able to see all PC's on the same network.
