I have a Procurve 5308xl switch which sits in between two sides of our network.

At the moment this serves a single subnet but I would like to split the network into two seperate subnets.

Can I do this without enabling VLANS on all the switches i.e. can I just change the IP addresses on each side of the network accordingly and enable IP routing on the 5308 switch?

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Lee

I would recommend doing this process using VLAN's, the network would gain more than the amount of time it would take to do it. If you need any help on VLAN's and HP switches let me know.

MrNick,

Thanks for the reply.

OK lets say we have Network A which sits to the left of the 5308 switch and network B which sits to the right of the switch.

Network A is our current subnet that covers everything. Network B would be our new subnet.

Would all the config just need to be done in the 5308 switch or would all switches need to be setup to know about the VLAN's?

Bearing in mind on each side of the 5308 we have a few switches not all HP and not all managed!

Thanks

Lee
