I know there was a thread relating to reseting the ip phone back to factory settings.

Can some one explain what the steps are.

EG. at what stage do you enter the reset password as in gberger post.

i tried it when the phone booted up when it asked for the password but ther was no confirmation anything had happened.
Do you enter it in at this stage.

any help will do

I found this on the web after i posted the question

Factory Default 1140 IP Phone

The method to factory reset a Nortel 1140 set is:

**73639[MAC]## – where [MAC] is the MAC address of the phone using the 2 key for A/B/C and the 3 key for D/E/F. You can also think of it as **RENEW[MAC]##.
You can enter this at any time once the IP Phone is powered up. If you have the phone configured for “Live Dial Pad” on a CS 1000, then it must be turned off for this sequence to work.

My question is does the phone have to be registered and working first.

Have you found the answer.... I am facing the same situation since I bought a bunch of password protected 1230.... is there a Nortel Master password like the old T7306

You will need to be running the following firmware at a minimum for this procedure to work;
IP 1110 (0623C6E), IP 1120E (0624C6E), IP 1140E (0625C6E), IP 1150E (0627C6E), IP 1210 (062AC6E), IP 1220 (062AC6E), IP 1230 (062AC6E)), and IP 2007 (0621C6D).

The key sequence will only be accepted after the phone has completed it's boot up sequence. It does not need to be registered.

..and in terms of passwords, need to understand what particular password you are trying to reset. If it is the Local Tools Menu Password, then did you try the default "color*set"? If it is a password provided by the BCM, then a "factory reset" will not make a difference.
