What would be the recommended IP phone for a new instal? I understand Nortel I2004 works well but what if the customer wants a NEW phone system?

If Shared Call Appearance is needed then Nortel Ip and digital sets will be a requirement. Other sip phones can't implement SCA.
Yealink, Grandstream, Cisco, Polycom, and Astra to name a few will all work with UCx server. Yealink is my first choice

For a new install and the customer can support it, I would highly recommend the Nortel/Avaya 11xx or 12xx Unistim Firmware load sets. These are still produced by Avaya brand new and can be obtained from many sources for very reasonable prices. Teletech in Itasca, IL has really good prices on these sets both new and refurbished. Why these sets? While the SIP phones work effectively, The Unistim sets take full advantage of all of the Nortel telephony features as well as the SIP server features on the UCx. And I think they are the BEST DAMN good looking IP phones on the market.

Using Nortel/Avaya UNISTIM phones and/or Nortel digital phones allows you to use a more advanced feature set (one of them is "shared call appearances"). If you need brand new phones, I believe the Avaya (formerly Nortel) 1100 and 1200 series IP phones are still being manufactured.

I prefer the Avaya\Nortel 11xx or 12xx series with a personal preference for the 12xx series for a couple of reasons.

1. The 1140 set has 6 buttons of 'real estate" to use
2. The 1230 set has 10 buttons of "real estate" to use
3. The 12xx series are more cost effective than the 11xx series. The 11xx series has an LED back lit display. The 12xx series has an LCD display. While the aesthetics of the 12xx sets may not be as palatable as the 11xx sets, the functionality is a little more of an advantage.

This goes down to personal preference, but I am familiar with he Avaya\Nortel sets and as previously posted, these setts allow you to take advantage of the Nortel feature set of the UCx. In addition, the Avaya\Nortel 11xx and 12xx sets ARE still being manufactured.

I hope this helps and have a blessed day!
