IP masquerading

I have a Linux box running RedHat 7.1 Kernel 2.4.2-2 with Iptables and IP masquerading. This is working great for modem sharing except for sending out large files. This hangs up large emails, ftp transfers etc. I have no problem receiving large files.

Anyone out there solve this and can tell me how to reconfigure?
