We have Comms Manager 5.2 running and IP solution across multiple site using 16xx and 96xx series phones. We seem to be getting repeated issues where the phones go into discover trying to find a CLAN card to connect to. In most cases this seems to be down to the users putting in a 4 digit extension number instead of 6 digit but the system does not reject it with an extension error message. In other cases the handset has been left logged on and just seems to go into discover for no reason. This seems to be more prevalent on the 16xx series phones.

Clearing the settings on the handset and then rebooting does resolve the issue but I was wondering if anyone had encountered similar issues and knew what may be causing this and a possible solution.

The 16xx series handsets are running 1.338b firmware (H323) and the 96xx series phones are on 3.1.2.
The data network has been checked and we have been told there are no issues in that respect.

Any help would be appreciated as it has got me and our maintainer baffled.

Discover means that the phone is looking for its controller. Are you 100% sure there aren't any intermittent network issues? Are you using CLAN's or PROCR? Do they have reliable network connections?

We are using CLAN cards and there do not seem to be network issues as our data team have investigated this.

When phones have gone into discover to re-establish communication with the gatekeeper, it tends to be isolated. If it was network issues I would expect other phones on the same data switch or same CLAN card to be affected but they aren't.

You are using CM 5.2. Is there any reason you are not using PROCR? The Clans are only 10/100 and can't handle the constant registration traffic the the PROCR running 10/100/1000 can. You should add ip-interface PROCR and enable it for H.323 registration. Then just point your phones to it instead of the CLAN. If this is not an option for you I'd recommend adding another CLAN to the same network region as the existing clan(s) to get additional load balancing.

We currently have plenty of CLAN cards in the network region and they are nowhere near capacity on socket usage, so I would doubt it is related to traffic on the CLAN cards. Seems odd that it is very sporadic and also the same issue happens when people enter the wrong extension number.
