Interesting question. Is it possible to track someone down by knowing their IP address?? At work, some of the network admin guys had this topic within earshot, and it got my interested. I don't know much about IPs and IP trackiing and what not.

But if you emailed someone, and your IP address appeared in their email header tags (like what Hotmail does), can someone use that to hack into your PC? Or find out where the email came from? Like what city and state?

One admin said that's not possible, all the "hacker" would get is the ISP provider and that's all, but some other guys were talking about some programs and routers that can do that.

If this is possible, that is some scary shit.

Thanks.

The IP that appears in the mail header is of the server that sent the mail (and those servers who handled the mail on behalf of the receiving domain).

To the extent that this IP is related to an ISP, your company, or whatever, then there are means to trace that using openly available network information. But this is going to come from information about to whom the IP range is registered with ARIN, RIPE, etc. (the IP number authorities).

Geographic location is possible, but the precision will vary based upon a number of factors. It is highly unlikely that your Hotmail-sent email will reveal you to being in your upper bedroom on a particular street of any town. But it might be able to determine that the mail server was in a specific country, state or even town.

Why would this concern you? You're the second person in this forum today asking about being traced or otherwise trying to hide yourself!?!?!?!?!?!?!

thedaver, LOL really?? I'm the second person today to ask this question?? Well, I'm not really "hiding" or anything, but the conversation at work just got me thinking.

I was curious as to why the IP header in my hotmail account was different then my Ip address. I just figuered that my router changed the IP number. Seems I was wrong.

Thanks.
