ip-codec-set x question 1

Hi All,

I know that there are codec sets 1-7. What I'm curious about is why there are 7 entries within each ip-codec-set?

Is everyone out there using encryption? Also, what about G.711 vs. G.723 vs. G.729? As I understand it, G.723 only needs 6.3 kbps plus overhead each way. But even the music on hold sounds a bit garbled with it...thanks for your answers.

As far as the codecs go we use G.729 for WAN traffic and G711 for traffic on the LAN. If possible it is worth havin QOS on your WAN connections to give the voice packets priority over Data packets.

You can specify multiple codecs in each set in case the other end you're talking to doesn't support your pref #1, or #2, etc..

it works just like a route list, until it can find a match down the list to use.

FYI I learned today that with CM 1.3 the encryption is "AEA" which is proprietary, but with CM 2.0 it is AES. Are there any bandwidth considerations with the encryption? Also, what is G.729 A and AB practically speaking? Thanks!
