I actually developp a homepage. When a user comes onto the site a asp function performs a log action where it inserts the ip adress from the user. I would like to know, if I can get the name of the users host with the users ip adress.

thanks

I dont think you can obtain this information, as the methods I am aware of do not provide user data, or are blocked by well configured firewalls.

The ways that this could be done, 1) use nbtstat -A n.n.n.n to query the IP address, BUT if it works then that indicates a poorly setup client, 2) reverse DNS lookup against the IP address, but again this will fail unless the ip address is assigned to a specific user, which is not very common.

Jeff_Mills,

There is a lot of information available from the browser itself. Browserhawk also has the ability to look up the host names. Just remember that you may not get a really good result, as routerman pointed out, firewalls and cable systems and telcos would distort the info.

For example, when I go to this link
the IP shown is the one that my router gets from my DSL provider. Looking up that address is the name from the telco, not my actual host name. Cyscape's product is still interesting and worth looking at. It might work for you.

Good luck.
