I have to build a small network with 3 pc's connected to internet via a router/hub.
The 3 PC's are exactly the same with 3 original different version of xp home.
The router is configurated so:
DHCP with a range of 50 adress begining with 192.168.1.10
mask 255.255.255.0
the ip of the router/hub is 192.168.1.1

all the 3 PC's are configured with XP home to have automaticaly an ip from dhcp. But the 3 have the same ip: 192.168.1.10! And no error message
Amazing, how is it possible?
the 3 can go on internet, the 3 have access to the router but no access to each others.
when I choose fix IP to each PC, I have no more access to Internet and no access to each others.
I take my portable PC and when I connect it to the hub, it take the ip 192.168.1.11, have access to internet but cannot see other pc's
I install other network card in PC's and optain different IP (192.168.1.12, 13, 14) but without seing anybody on the network
I install netbeui from the cd of xp and then, I can see in the network other pc's (but after a long time) but with access denied to sharing.
Can somebody help? I need to understand!

what happens if go to a command prompt and type:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

on each of them? What you're describing shouldn't be possible.

Very strange problem.

Your router is likely at fault, or pilot error on your part. You obviously changed the default DHCP scope on the router; it may not like this. I know some IBM and 3Coms do not like it at all.

On the router:
. Check for new firmware from the manufacturer's web site
. If nothing from the web site, revert the router to its factory settings.

On all the PCs do this checklist:

1. Make certain they all have unique computer names; this is not directly the problem, but is related.

2. Under the property sheet for the adapter, TCP/IP properties, Advanced, WINS tab, disable LMHOSTS, WINS, and check that Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled.

3. Any static IP device should, (check the documentation for the router) either be safely inside the DHCP scope of the router, or safely outside the scope (router firmware dependent).

A firm power-off reset of routers and all machines should resolve the issue. This is not a PC client issue, it is a router one. If the router still screws up DHCP replace it.
