hi guys ...

i have a small question ... i feel like it is hard to understand ip addressing ... and i need any advise on this problem ... so would u please reply me and tell me spme tips that would help me ... of course in general ... u can tell me a name of a handy book or direct me to a very good site that i can learn ip from it ...

Make sure that you understand basic Binary to decimal conversion before you get involved with ip classes and subnet masks.

FACTS:

8 BITS = 1 BYTE

BITS can be either on or off

10100000

the decimal value of each bit from left to right is:

128/64/32/16/8/4/2/1

So the above octet or byte (8 bits) has a decimal value of 160.

You can see this by adding up the BITS that are switched on:
10100000

10100000
1 3
2 2
8

128+32=160

A IP address is made up of four of these octets or bytes which is 32 BITS in total

10100000.10100000.00000001.00000101

these four octets are represented in dotted decimal:

160.160.1.5

Hope this helps,

You can try for some slide show presentations, but I found the best way is to sit down with a pencil and paper and do the conversions from DEC to BIN and the other way around and you will see patterns which will help when you go on to subnetting,
