just had to do a system restore on my 98 machine, reinstalled a new network card, setup the ip address in network properties. then looked at ipconfig and there is nothing there!!!

any answers?????

ipconfig is not for 98....If it's running dhcp...you can click on start--->run and type winipcfg....then a box will appear. Click on "release all" and then "renew all". Ipconfig works only if you use DHCP. for static addresses, change it to which you want and when prompted, don;t restart, windows uses the new address after some time.

thanks for the ideas... unfortunately i tried both and neither work... getting a little frustrated now. any more ideas????

adding my two cents...

Do you get any errors if you try: open a command prompt --> type "ping 127.0.0.1" (without the quotes)
-If you can't ping that, then there might be something wrong with your IP software or the NIC card

See if you have the TCP/IP protocol installed. Most likely you did since you were able to set an IP address

i hope this helps

thanks for the sugestions - got it sorted in the end.....
un-installed all network components and re-installed tcp/ip protocol - now working all ok!!!!!
tyvm for help!!!
