hi, i'm new to tcp/ip, got a bunch of questions..

in relation with the topic 'useable IP addresses' initiated by ex34i...

while searching the net for something usefull for my project about mapping a certain country/region i've found in the RIPE database several files that keep all the IP adresses currently allocated to backbones, providers. After some parsing on the file i got the entire network of a country and i come to the conclusion that for example, for the UK network we have about 27 million IP addresses allocated. The question is, are all these IPs really used? A small organization may have an inetnum of 194.73.200.0 - 194.73.201.255 for example, are all these 510 IPs really used??

tx in advance, by..

Well, they're allocated, so they're unavailable, so they're used...

If want to know if the admin has leveraged all the the IPs in the allocation you'd need to ask the admin, and all the admins who are working their netblocks.

If it's allocated then it's used.

ok,

well, i can't ask the admins. but since these ips are unreachable i suppose it's just a question of ping them all to know wich ones are alive :p ..

tx :)

bye

pings are not a good barometer of whether the IP is in use. It is quite common to block pings. Why are you doing this anyways?

I'm mapping the Ips of a certain region, it's a college project.. after that i must study the servers that are running on those hosts. Something like Netcraft..

That's why i asked about those inetnumbers, it seems to me that a lot of IPs, although allocated, are unused, and it's a waste of time and resources to scan them all for open ports.

any suggestion? maybe i'm not thinking right about the way to do this...

tx.

Services running on servers will change by the second.
I find your project morally questionable to scan these machines so often. That could be viewed as abusive, innapropriate or seen as as attack. I caution you in pursuing this effort.

the project is for statistic purposes only. I do not intend to attack anything.

I think it's not abusive to find out which http server is running at some host.

anyway, thanks for your advise.

You do not think so, but many admins run Intrusion Detection Systems which track who and how are scanning their networks and often take steps to block the effort.

Do not be surprised if your "targets" are entirely happy about your venture.
