Hi,

I've just at a new company and my first job is to document the LAN/WAN etc. I'm currently looking what ip addresses are being used etc and have come across an ip address that nobody knows where it is. I've tried an nslookup on it but no joy, i've looked in the wins database but nothing in there. Is there away i can find out what its host name is? or any other info on that address.

Many thanks

Here are a couple things you can try:

1) Dos prompt: ping -a (ip address)
This may return a hostname for you.

2) Dos prompt: nbtstat -A (ip address). This may give you a login name, as well as the MAC address depending on what OS the machine is running. Assuming you are using Cisco gear, traceroute (tracert "ip address") from DOS and telnet to the second to last hop. Issue the "sho cam (mac address)" command in the switch, (or sho mac, depending on switch model) and begin tracing back towards the port at which the device is connected. Once you get a port, issue the "sho cdp neigh (port number) detail", and then telnet to the next device. Keep repeating this until you find the user port on your access switch.

Hope this helps.

Hi

I downloaded a freeware package LANguard Network Scanner. All you do is give it an IP address or hostname and it does all the hard work for you. I just tried it out on a cisco switch and it reported some of the information on that too...A very useful tool in this instance....think i got it from download.com

:)

Tracert (MS world), trace (IOS) will run a traceroute to a destination FQDN or IP address and (assuming a DNS mapping exists) will tell you not only the DNS entry, but also the path to the device..

I've also been able to find out the identity of unknown IPs with my browser. Just put in Many devices have web interfaces now for configuration. I've discovered a ton of printers that have default community strings this way.

WhatsUP gold is handy too. Do an snmp query and see what pops up. Many people don't change their community strings not realizing the device is wide open to snooping around in.
