in terms of hacking what can an ip address allow u to do?
i am not planning to do anything i just wanted to know as ppl seem to ask for my ip address all the time

Well, if you give out your IP Address to people, hackers can piggy back your ip address and use it to do things wihtout you knowing.

So unless it is an IT person, don't give it out.

i dont give out my ip address, but like i want to know what ppl can do to my computer with just my ip address????

Hi,

Well they can find some info about you by doing a whois on the address - it might only tell someone which isp you used, though.

Mostly, you can scan (using nmap or equivalent) all the tcp/udp ports for that ip address to determine what services might be running and to get a 'fingerprint' of the machine. Basically, this info can be used for hacking (sic) your box for various dodgy reasons. I should point out that you send your ip address all the time when you use the internet and its very easy for any site to 'collect' your ip address and other environment variables.

On the other hand, if you have a connectivity problem its quite likely that someone checking your connection would want your ip address to test connectivity by 'ping', etc. So it all depends on who's asking really...
