Im trying to set up a VPN link from a windows 2000 professional pc to a Windows 2000 server pc. My win2kserver network of about 10 pcs currently uses addresses 192.168.5.x with mask 255.255.255.0, the other network with the win2kprof. (5 pcs) uses 192.168.0.x. Both machines on each network hav Cable Modem connections to the internet. I want it so that I can connect the two networks so it is like we are effectively on the same network. So I can just just access the pcs on the other network by typing their IP address. Is this possible? When I try at the moment, I authenticate and connect fine. However cannot seem to ping either network from the other one. Also when the win2kprof pc makes a connection am I best assigning it an ip from my DHCP server, ie 192.168.5.x or something completely different eg 172.16.1.2
In addition i am running NAT in routing and remote access so that my pcs on the lan can use the internet, have tried disabling this but it still wont work. Does anyone know of a good guide on the internet or have any suggestions, as I sure cant understand microsoft's attempt at making one.

Kind Regards

Steve

Stephen,

You do not mention what 'flavour' of VPN you are using, i.e. PPTP, LPSEC, etc. I would however recommend that at the server side that you set up a DHCP server and you configure the client VPN (win2kprof) connection to use a DHCP assigned address. If all works well after the connection then the client machine will be a part of the server side Lan.

If you run the command "route print" from a command prompt on the client machine you should see that the VPN machine is the gateway for adresses on the 192.168.5.x LAN and that the client machine has been assigned an IP address from that network.

Good luck
