IP address question

I'm not a professional but have a question that I can't seem to get an answer to and this seemed like a logical choice.

What kind of IP address is this:

http://0137.0333.0227.0070/

This doesn't seem to be a valid address yet it resolves and I have no clue how or why.

The address, as well as a bunch of others like it, are in some spam I was getting.

My thing was I knew that it wasn't a valid IP but couldn't figure out how the address was resolved and redirected to another site.

I had asked several people and nobody knew what I was talking about.

Do you have any idea how these addresses actually work?

It is an octal, or Base 8 address.

Well, I just realized that 0137.0333.0227.0070 is octal for 95.219.151.106.

But I had no clue that octal numbers could be used in an IP address. Is that a function of the browser?

It's a function of the browser in that it will accept octal addresses, but pretty much all computers themselves are fine with them. The underlying value is the same, and that's all that matters.

As a matter of fact, that is exactly how spammers hide their real info within the URL!

Yup, throw in an obfuscated address with meaningless credentials and you've got a relatively convincing URL (for an uneducated user):
