Hi, I'm an absolute newbie on this matter. Basically, I was able to setup our Internet "server" and Internet sharing using WinME as front end. On the sharing users, I setup the gateway to the address of the "internet server" and the IP address to Obtain an IP address automatically. I really need to supply the IP address for a program I'm developing. But, when I do, the "client" cannot access into the Internet, but it can browse the "server". Ping also works fine. Here's a detail of what I made:

"Internet server"
IP: 192.168.0.6
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

"Client"
'This doesn't work
IP: 192.168.0.10
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.0.6

Protocols: IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, TCP/IP
Client: Client for Microsoft Networks

TIA [peace]

Hi Alphanytz
Your settings are right. I have a little doubt about DNS. SO try to ping an internet IP from the client. To do so, choose a site (eg: then execute a ping -a query from the server command prompt :

ping -a
and look in the result, you'll have got

statistics for the ping command : ....... 216.44.21.12
(the IP of tek-tips)

now, you have to ping this IP from the client

ping 216.44.21.12

if the ping is positive, then there is probably a DNS trouble

you can also put the IP in the adress field of your internet browser, and see if you can browse the site

Now here's a bunch of questions.

1) What's static IP? Is that the IP I will assign to a client?
2) It's interesting that most books/sites offer suggestions using TCP/IP only. When should I use IPX/SPX and NetBEUI?
3) Do you know other useful sites like TheOldMan346 gave?

Hi,

I got it working better now! Thanks for all your help. I'll start a new thread for the last 3 questions.

alphanytz,

1) What's static IP? Is that the IP I will assign to a client?
Static IP is an assigned address that does not change. Dynamic IP [also called DHCP] is an address that is given out by a DHCP server and may be different each time you bring up the machine.
2) It's interesting that most books/sites offer suggestions using TCP/IP only. When should I use IPX/SPX and NetBEUI?
TCP/IP is the de facto standard. Although there are some drawbacks [like security], it is all you need. IPX/SPX is used primarily with Novell server environments. NetBEUI is the basic Windows file sharing protocol. It is built into recent implementations of TCP/IP. While simple and fast, it is not routable and can only be used on a single subnet of a network.
3) Do you know other useful sites like TheOldMan346 gave?
Take a look at

Hope that helps.
