I have several 4400 switchs in place and have an ip issue. My network has a direct connection to the internet, and I understand that because it is that my switches need to have a registered ip assigned to them instead of an ip from my network such as 10.1.x.x. The book makes a small mention about this. I am having some problems accessing one of these switches at a remote site.

I am curious how some of you have your switches setup. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

What exactly is the problem you're having?

Can you clarify what you mean by a "direct" connection to the Internet (as opposed to what?)
(I don't see any reason why any LAN switches would ever need public IP addresses by the way).

By direct I simply mean that we have access out to the internet. I have a remote office where I have a cisco 1841 router and a 3Com 4400 switch, and I am unable to access this switch. Back at my home office there is a pix 515, and these two offices are connected thru a vpn tunnel and I have several of these same switch's there that I can access from either site. I just can't figure out the switch at the remote site. I was looking at this forum, and it seems that people are assigning addresses from their private network range to their switch's.

When I first installed my switch's, and gave them a 10.1.x.x address, it caused my pix to go into a continuous reboot cycle.

i really believe the 4400 switch should have a Private IP as it doesn't route IPs (data link only). if you need to access the 4400 through a 1841 then you need some type of software that does remote such as RDS, VNC, and etc...

configure your 1841 to port through a host then you'll have access to your private LAN.
