could anybody tell me the tool to use to find ip address
of local machine
thanks

On windows 9x machine like win98 or win95 type go to run and type in winipcfg and that will display thr info. On a nt or windows 2000 go to dos prompt and type in ipconfig /all and you will see all the info.
GOOD Luck

And on most Unix Systems use "ifconfig".
