Here is the scenario. I have an IP 403 connected to a cisco 24 port switch. I have 10 computers connected with ip's 10.40.0.xxx. The office is set up via standard LAN, with file servers, DHCP etc. I want to add 10 ip phones 4612's and 24's to the same cat5 wire to the desktop. Now I know that the phones have only hubs in them, but do I need Vlan's? How can i have the 10.40.0.xxx for the computer and 10.40.0.xx a different ip address for the phones? If I do need vlan's how is this set up via the Ip office?

You don't have to have Vlans. The phones basically work as a hub, where it takes the IP Address it needs and passes on the network connection to your computer (assuming the phones are the SW ver). So basically just imagine you have a hub placed on the desk where the phone is, that ties into the phone automatically and the "data jack" on the phone is a pass through for the network traffic to the computer.

Vlan's allow you to break up the traffic so it doesn't collide basically. If you just have a small network, I doubt this will truly be a problem for you. You wouldn't set this up in the IP office, you would configure it in your switch and point the port the IP Office is set on to the correct Vlan.
