Invoking a Desktop App from a Browser

I know it has been asked before, but can you invoke a known app on a desktop from within a web app? Can you change the security policy to enable the invocation of a specific desktop app?

The short answer is no.

You may be able to do it via Runtime.getRuntime.exec() from an applet, but you would need to sign the applet.

Also, to be honest, if an ActiveX or Applet requested that level of permissions, I wouldn't accept the download !

This would be for an intranet app to support the user's business needs, so they would be willing to accept it or it would potential be setup via a net admin.
