I have an old seagate ST3491a HDD (about 850MB I think), when I try to format using fdisk, it is only showing 430MB. This is the primary partion. There are no extended, logical or non dos partitions available. How can I see the remaining partition?

Thanks in advance.

The rest of the hard-drive is not allocated. In order to get the space start fdisk and remove your primary partition.
Now make a new Primary partition and allocate the full 860 mb to it. After that you can make a extended partition if you'd like.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Wolluf, I will try you recommended app when I get home tonight.

Kocky, I had removed all visible partitions and then tried to create a new primary, but only 430 (or thereabouts) was showing as available, and not the full amount.

Could this be a case for low-level formatting?

Geoff

How about it being a 491mb hard drive? I'm not familiar with that one, but generally the first number is family and the group following is size.
Take a look on the seagate site, they have specs. Ed Fair

edfair, ya beat me to it- :)

The drive was probably drivespaced or doublespaced before, hence your recollection of 800mg. The formatting process would have removed the compression.
