Has anyone implemented Blue Ocean Software's Track-It Package and used it for software inventory? I'm curious to get some unbiased opinions of how well it actually works. Jeff

I haven't lost my mind - I know it's backed up on tape somewhere ....

Follow-up: Is anyone using Track-Man? I would also be interested in other LOW COST auditing/inventory packages people are using. Jeff

Jeff: Do you mind if I asked what product you ended up going with for your inventory tracking?

Can you define "low-cost"? How much would you pay for a product that tracks over 300 inventory items (hardware and software) including inventory changes and changes to hardware configurations? The product can also monitor application usage so you know what apps people have that aren't being used, user auditing, resource consumption of applications, a detailed troubleshooting module, billing capability, and much more. The product does all of this even if a machine is disconnected from the network (ie. laptop) and forwards the information the next time the machine is connected to the network - even over a dial-up link. If you would like more informaion, please let me know.
Thank you,
Mike

I'm doing my own Access database. More than $20.00 per machine is getting too expensive. Also, all of the commercial systems are far too detailed for my needs. All I want to do is very basic matching of tagged items to users, with very general configuration information.

Jeff,

The Track-It style packages offer the 'legal' aspect of EXACTLY what's on the machine including dll's and all .exe's, .coms and so on.

I've done my own Access database to store the more hardware aspect, peripherals, printers, users, IP addresses, MAC addresses and so on. Each computer can have the detail of RAM, CPU, software, serial nos etc. It doesn't prove my company is legal for software like the commercial programs, but it serves its purpose.

Wrote it about 6 years ago and I still use it every day. It prepares reports for management on who has what, makes up the telephone list and most importantly there are the insurance reports too.

So the question is - what do you want to do with the system?

The inventory "only" component portion would cost $15/machine. There is a lease option as well, in which all lease payments can be applied toward the purchase price. Leases are handled on a quarterly basis. The installation of this program is extremely simple. If it looks like something you would want to take a look at, let me know and I will put you in touch with the company who developed it. Please e-mail me at kapski@yahoo.com. The change management capability of this program is a strong feature. By clicking one icon, you can see all changes for all systems on the entire network. There is a nice filtering mechanism that weeds out the stuff you are not interested in. Alternatively you can go directly to a specific system to see it's inventory and/or changes.
