hi,

can anyone tell me what the typical causes for Invalid Operation mught be - i read csv files with a stored procedure which takes the file contents and inserts them into tables.
when i read "Book1.csv" it inserts no problem but when i try "Book2.csv" (which identical and without key conflicts)
i get Invalid Operation

any help is appreciated

Are the files in the same subdirectory?
Are the OS permissions on the files the same?

hello carp,

yes the files are in the same directory and have the same os permissions.
now, this is going to sound weird but just to tinker a bit i renamed "Book1.csv" (the one that was working) to "Book4.csv" and it no longer worked and raised an Invalid Operation exception. Then when i renamed it back to its original name "Book1.csv" it worked fine.
I checked the stored procedure, the com object and asp involved and no where is "Book1.csv" hard coded anywhere.

have you ever heard anything like i before?

No, but it sure SOUNDS like it's hardcoded somewhere!
And since you are just renaming files, I think we can rule out structural differences.
