I have a network that has Win 98 SE computers and a Linux Red Hat 7.2 computer. I had samba installed and could see the Win 98 computers from the Linux computer but could not see the Linux computer from any of the Win 98 computers. All the Win 98 computers can see each other. The big problem, and the one I need help with the most, is that I installed SOHO on my Win 98 computer that has a cable modem and that worked fine. I can get on the internet from the Linux computer through the Win 98 computer. Now when I use smbclient and try to login I get this error message: "tree connect failed: ERRSRV - ERRinvnetname (invalid network name in tree connect)." I don't know if something changed when I installed SOHO to cause this or if it is just a coincidence. Before I installed SOHO the Linux computer had a static IP address, now it gets its ip address from the SOHO software. I can ping between all the machines ok. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?
thanks

check the permissions of the shares in the LINUX machine. This could create a problem.

Also please post a portion of the log files. This could help us to solve the issue further.

After doing a lot of checking, there is no log file for samba on this machine. Using grep I could find no reference to samba in any log file.
There is no swat config file, but there is an entry in the /etc/services file: swat 901/tcp.
I can not run swat from netscape: localhost:901. Seems like I have a lot of pieces missing but I don't know all the pieces necessary. I don't know where to go from here, maybe a reinstall?

where did you get your version of samba from?

The version of Samba I have came on the Linux 7.2 CDs that came with a book I bouhgt: Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible by Christopher Negus. Samba was installed during initial install of the OS.

Have you doublechecked /var/log/ for logs like "log.nmbd" ?

Yes, I checked /var/log. I also used find/grep and checked the entire hard drives for the string smb and samba. Nothing.

Best solution is to do a clean reinstall. This time download samba from the website samba.org and follow the installation instructions.

Should I remove the old samba files before I do a complete install from the downloaded file from samba.org?

In the red hat 7.2
rpm -q samba (this will give you which version of samba you are using)
rpm -e samba XXX (this will remove samba where xxx is the version).
Better to remove samba and reinstall it.
